What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup checks the Domain Name System (DNS) records published for a domain. DNS helps browsers and other internet services find the servers associated with a domain name and determine how services such as email should be routed.

The JOL London DNS Lookup Tool queries a public DNS-over-HTTPS resolver and presents the returned records in a readable format. It is useful for basic troubleshooting, checking mail routing, reviewing name servers, and inspecting common DNS values.

DNS record types explained

A

A record

Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address.

AAAA

AAAA record

Maps a domain name to an IPv6 address.

MX

MX record

Lists mail servers that receive email for a domain, usually with a priority value.

TXT

TXT record

Stores text values commonly used for SPF, domain verification and other service settings.

CNAME

CNAME record

Points one DNS name to another canonical name.

NS

NS record

Identifies authoritative name servers associated with a DNS zone.

SOA

SOA record

Contains zone administration details, including the primary name server, responsible mailbox field, serial and timing values.

Frequently asked questions

Is this DNS lookup tool free?

Yes. The JOL London DNS Lookup Tool is designed to be free to use without creating an account.

Why might a DNS record not appear?

The record may not exist, the resolver may not return it, the domain may have a different configuration, or cached DNS data may not yet reflect a recent change.

Can I use this tool to check email DNS?

Yes. Check MX records to review mail-server routing and TXT records to inspect published SPF or verification values. This tool does not fully validate email deliverability or SPF/DKIM/DMARC configuration.

Does this tool show every DNS record?

No. It checks the selected common record types through a public resolver. It does not perform a full authoritative zone transfer or guarantee that every record is visible.

How long do DNS changes take to appear?

Timing depends on TTL values, caching and provider behaviour. Changes may appear quickly, but some resolvers can continue returning cached information for a period of time.
